Demon's Surrender Discussion Post!

Happy book birthday to Sarah Rees Brennan and Demon's Surrender! Since I've been so pushy about getting people to read these books, I thought I might as well provide a space for discussion. I'm not going to say anything else in the main post here, for fear of spoiling, so head down to the comments if you've finished the book and want to talk!

WARNING: COMMENTS ARE FULL OF SPOILERS!!!!

  1. To get the ball rolling: I AM SO HAPPY THAT THEY ALL LIVE MORE OR LESS HAPPILY EVER AFTER. I may have planned out the rest of their lives. Ahem.

  2. I like that the happy ever after is entirely up to them. Also that it comes at a large moral cost, they are now giving people to a demon. So what happens if they run out of bad magicians to give them to? Other stuff I loved. Nick working out why he was upset about Sin and Alan, him listening to Mae and 'reasoning' it out. Nick and Jamie - I love that Nick wants to give him power and a hand 'cause he's showing affection and Jamie explaining why it isn't a good idea. That after Alan, it's Mae and Jamie Nick is close too - cause he understands the sibling bond. That Sin and Alan are so alike, lying, cheating whatever it takes for their siblings.
I like Alan but I wish that he had more faults than the lying. Apart from lying to and for Nick, the lying was a bit more show than tell in bk 2, so I was glad to see she fleshed that out.
Finally, it's set in London and more specifically West London and as a West London girl, that makes me happy....

  3. I AM SO HAPPY, TOO. I loved Nick's reasoning as well. And I love Alan. I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED ALAN. SO, THIS BOOK WAS A FULL ON ALAN FEST AND I LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT.

  4. Yes, this book was Alan-centric, which I LOVED. And I love that the characters stayed true to what they were at the beginning of the trilogy, they GREW, but they didn't become different people. Wonderful! (Sometimes that gets screwed up at the end of a trilogy, to make everyone feel like the happy-ever-after will absolutely be FOREVER, since, see? All the character flaws are gone!) I LOVED THIS BOOK.

  5. I also loved this book! I liked Sin a lot before but I loved the different perspective--it was interesting to see that Sin and Alan thought of Mae as perfect, when in the book from her point of view she seemed confused (understandably!) and a lot less sure of herself. I was also impressed with how SRB kept the relationships shifting without being too much of a tease or to the point of distraction. I loved how conflicted all those relationships were, too--it was possible for Sin to respect Mae's ideas and tenacity and at the same time refuse to submit and let Mae take over the Market.

I too loved how the characters struggled and grew and paid high prices for their victories.
