Oscar Project 2016: Inside Out

Movie: Inside Out

This had a clever, fun concept - a young girl's anthropomorphized emotions try to deal with the change when her family moves across the country - and I'd heard a lot of good things about it going in, but it just didn't quite work for me. The set-up and world-building were interesting and well-planned, but there wasn't really enough story there and it started to feel repetitive. "Okay, I get it," I said to the screen several times. I think I would have loved this as a short, but it was a little thin as a feature.

Availability: On DVD/Blu-Ray or available to rent or buy via download.

Nominated in:

Animated Feature Film: It was fine, so I wouldn't generally object, I guess, but I didn't think it was particularly notable and there's at least one nominee in the category I thought was much better.

Writing (Original Screenplay): No. Again, beyond the clever concept, I didn't think the writing held up well enough here to sustain a full feature.
