Why isn't Stephanie Plum a TV show?
One for the Money, the movie based on the first Stephanie Plum novel by Janet Evanovich, arrives in theaters today. (Actually, it had a bunch of midnight showings last night, which kind of confused me given the presumed target audience.) I have nothing against the movie - I don't share everyone's hatred of Katherine Heigl - and I'll tell you what I thought after I see it next weekend. But ever since the movie was announced, I've been vaguely annoyed because it seems like this books series would work so well as a TV show. The books are very episodic, and they have a likable heroine, quirky family and friends, plenty of action, and the longest-running love triangle in the history of ever, OMG make it stop. I guess they're trying to make a movie franchise out of it, but I really think it would be more successful on USA or TNT or maybe even CBS. But, alas, they do not put me in charge of these things.

Because they can get more money from a movie franchise than a TV series before everyone realizes how derivative it is?
ReplyDeleteI know there's all kinds of big shot politics and business/money issues that determine what shows and movies get made and which don't, but I TOTALLY agree that this series should be a TV show. And I think it would be awesome if it was on HBO or Showtime so they could get heavy into the danger and crimes and we could also see more of Morelli and Ranger, OF COURSE.
ReplyDeleteIt could happen. Look at "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," the movie was really cheesy, but the tv show went on for several seasons. They need to get Alan Ball to produce it. He transformed the Sookie Stackhouse books into riveting tv.

ReplyDeleteThast EXACTLY what I thinking I love Katherine but the movie was HOORRIBLE.I think it would be great as a T.V show it would last a lot of seasons I could see it on TNT and they could show it pretty late so I could get myself a FULL dose of Ranger haha
ReplyDeleteI agree a tv series would be a wonderful venue for the Stephanie Plum characters to delight and entertain us. The movie didn't give all the characters enough room to be the fun personalities they are. I read that Janet E has teamed with the writer of the Monk tv series (an excellent show). Maybe there is hope that Plum et.al will make it to be a tv series.
