Oscar Project 2016: Joy

Movie: Joy

Joy, about inventor/entrepreneur Joy Mangano, was a bit of an odd movie that left the impression that it never quite decided what it wanted to be - inspirational biopic? Emotionally complicated family drama? Still, I mostly enjoyed it: the performances were good and I loved the portrayal of a female business pioneer that showed her strength and success but also made clear what it cost her. And, much as I enjoy love stories, it was refreshing that they didn't try to add a big romantic subplot.

Actress in a Leading Role: Sure. Jennifer Lawrence did a good job expressing a pretty wide range here. She probably wouldn't be my first choice, but honestly, four of the five nominees in this category are very close in my estimation and I'd be fine with any of them winning.
