A Brief List of Elderly Strangers Who Are Never Allowed to Die
John le Carré's new novel is out today, and I've read a bunch of reviews of it, and a very common subtext - and in some cases text text - is just pure relief at the fact that le Carré, who turns 86 next month, is still alive and writing (coherently and well!). AND I AGREE. We cannot possibly be expected to deal with the world, especially in its present state, without knowing that he and his characters are out there. Stay well, Mr. Cornwell.
Also in this category for me:
Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer - Yes, I need both of them. The Sound of Music was very formative for me, okay?
Maggie Smith - Don't worry; I'm sure McGonagall will figure out immortality if she wants.
Beverly Cleary - She's 101. I know we should be grateful we've had her for so long. Still.
Derek Jacobi - I feel better just knowing Cadfael is in the world.
Jimmy Carter - I mean, seriously. I know he can't actually do anything official but I just feel like we need all the decent ex-presidents we can get for some kind of karmic balance.
Her Majesty the Queen - I don't even want to talk about it.
EDITED TO ADD: Ruth Bader Ginsberg - My friend Abby just reminded me and I CAN'T BELIEVE I FORGOT HER.

The Rolling Stone feature on Hamilton and accompanying interview with Lin-Manuel Miranda are worth a read.
As is Esquire's delightful profile of Daveed Diggs, who plays Lafayette and Jefferson. (And I feel like in all the talk about him having the fasted rapping on Broadway, people don't even MENTION that it's in a non-native accent! [French, as Lafayette.])
This will sound familiar to anyone who has tried to get a toddler to pose for a formal picture: Mike Tindall opens up about daughter Mia's scene-stealing handbag moment in the Queen's 90th birthday portrait And of course the Queen was the one to realize how to get her to behave, because this is the kind of thing she's dealt with constantly her whole life. Never say Her Majesty isn't good at her job.

This Sound of Music fiftieth anniversary profile of Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer is great and the ending made me cry.
Jenji Kohan's HBO pilot sounds intriguing - historical hysteria, possibly Salem? Whee.
Also sounding intriguing: Ishiguro's new Arthurian novel.
Whoa: This Teeny Chair Can Assemble Itself
This Nick Hornby interview is delightful and made me wonder why I've only read a few of his books.
